Rick Anderson
Managing Director

Mr. Anderson was formerly Company Group Chairman, Johnson & Johnson, and Worldwide Franchise Chairman, Cordis Corporation. Mr. Anderson also served as President of Cordis Corporation and was previously Worldwide Franchise Vice President of Centocor, Inc., which merged with Johnson & Johnson in 1999. Mr. Anderson was a key architect behind the launch of the world’s first drug-eluting stent the CYPHER® Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent. This breakthrough innovation for the treatment of restenosis (reblockage) has been used to treat more than three million patients worldwide. Before joining Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Anderson served in senior leadership positions with other international healthcare and medical device companies. At Racal HealthCare, Inc., he was Vice President, Global Marketing and responsible for respiratory devices and before that, he spent a decade with Boehringer Mannheim Pharmaceuticals and Allergan Pharmaceuticals in various U.S. and global sales, sales management, and marketing management roles.

Mr. Anderson holds a B.B.A. in Marketing from Mississippi State University and has completed graduate level course work at Indiana University and Duke University. He served five years in the United States Army where he obtained the rank of captain. Mr. Anderson is a member of the Economic Advisory Board of Mississippi State University and a consultant member of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and has worked within the industry to shape global education of interventional specialties. Mr. Anderson is currently on the boards of Cameron Health, InSite Vision (OTC BB: INSV.OB), and Tryton Medical, and acts as Chairman of the Board for Cardiva Medical, and IDEV Technologies.  Mr. Anderson also participates in the AdvaMed Venture Capital Advisory Council.

Matthew S. Crawford
Founding Managing Director

Prior to founding PTV Sciences, Mr. Crawford was a Partner at Academy Funds, a venture capital firm based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. While at Academy, Mr. Crawford participated in the creation and financing of many healthcare companies. Mr. Crawford graduated from Wake Forest University with a B.A. and M.B.A., where he conducted research on venture capital and capital markets activities. Upon graduation, he joined First Union Capital Markets Corporation and rose to Vice President during his six years at the firm. While at First Union, Mr. Crawford worked with all aspects of financing small, mid-size, and large companies. Mr. Crawford participates on the Business Advisory Board for the Institute for the Study of Aging, located in New York City, as well as the Alumni Council Board at Wake Forest University. Mr. Crawford currently sits on the boards of Apollo Endosurgery, IDEV Technologies, LDR Spine, and On-X Life Technologies.

Evan S. Melrose, M.D.
Founding Managing Director

With over 22 years in Healthcare, Dr. Melrose possesses unique knowledge and extensive operating experience in various aspects of healthcare investments (both public and private), research, clinical practice, education, and health policy; specifically medical devices, healthcare IT, health services and biotechnology. Prior to founding PTV Sciences, Dr. Melrose was a Director with Burrill & Company, a San Francisco-based life science private equity/venture capital firm where he managed investments on behalf of limited partners including IBM, Unilever, Novo, Aventis, Proctor & Gamble, ADM, and Bayer. Dr. Melrose also founded PanTerra Capital Partners, an investment firm focused on the convergence of healthcare with information technology, by leveraging the expertise he acquired in medical informatics and healthcare IT at the Regenstrief Institute, INOVA Health System, and The Informatics Institute. It was also during this time that he was asked to write the Foreword to Wiley's book, E-Health, Telehealth, and Telemedicine: A Guide to Startup and Success. Dr. Melrose has held faculty appointments at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and currently at Baylor College of Medicine. His courses included, “From Idea to IPO” at the University of California, San Francisco, through support from the Kauffman Foundation; healthcare entrepreneurship classes at the University of Pennsylvania; and seminars for numerous organizations including the Young Presidents Organization and the Association of University Technology Managers. His comprehensive clinical experience includes ‘cross training’ in medicine with Mayo Clinic, University of Miami, University of Virginia, Georgetown University and The George Washington University. While at Fairfax Family Practice (INOVA Health System) his traditional primary care private practice included obstetrics, pediatrics, emergency medicine, cardiac intensive care, and credentialed procedures involving GI endoscopy, dermatology, sports medicine, cardiology, ENT, and urology. His broad health service experiences include clinical practice with a 120 physician full-risk capitated clinical practice, clinical practice with a staff model HMO (Kaiser Permanente-Northern California), and evaluating new services/HCIT opportunities in collaboration with Humana and McKesson. Dr. Melrose conducted and published both biomedical and medical device (outcomes/comparative effectiveness) research for the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and the Regenstrief Institute, an internationally recognized informatics and healthcare research organization for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR). He has also had articles published in medical journals including the Archives of Internal Medicine and the Archives of Family Medicine. Dr. Melrose has received honors including selection as an AMA Health Policy Fellow to work on Medicare reform on Capitol Hill; the first American United Life/Bowen Research Center Scholar (in honor of Dr. Otis Bowen, Secretary of Health and Human Services for the Reagan Administration and Former Indiana Governor); and the American Medical Association/Glaxo-Wellcome Leadership Award. He has served in national leadership roles for the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Melrose initiated the Project Magic program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where magicians and occupational therapists aid in the rehabilitation of physically-challenged children by teaching them the art of magic. Following Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Melrose volunteered his services to actively care for patients in the Houston Astrodome following their relocation from New Orleans.

He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine, completed internship with Georgetown University/George Washington University/University of Virginia Schools of Medicine in partnership with INOVA Health System, completed residency with Fairfax Family Practice/Medical College of Virginia, completed a two year academic faculty development fellowship with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After gaining clinical and operating experience he later received his M.B.A. from The Wharton School. He has completed post graduate coursework at the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development, the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering (Drug Development, Nanotechnology, the American Association of Clinical Chemistry (Pharmacogenomics, Cardiology) and will be completing coursework at Harvard Law School this year. He has extensive public and private company experience including audit and compensation committee representation and has completed the Institutional Shareholder Services Director Education Certification at the UCLA Anderson School of Business. Current and prior advisory board experience includes: BayBIO-BayBioNest, Rice University Jesse Jones School of Business-Rice Alliance, BioHouston, MD Anderson Technology Review Committee, BIO Investor Forum, and MedTech Insight IN3. Dr. Melrose currently sits on the boards of Asuragen, BioSurface Engineering Technologies, OrthoKinematics, Mirna Therapeutics, and Sinexus. Current and prior investments include Glycomimetics, Accumetrics, Ziopharm Oncology (Nasdaq: ZIOP), BioForm Medical (Nasdaq: BFRM), BioMimetic Therapeutics (Nasdaq: BMTI), Alexza Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ALXA), Corus Pharma (Acquired: GILD), and Targacept (Nasdaq: TRGT). Dr. Melrose also serves as Chairman of the Board for InSite Vision (OTC BB: INSV.OB). He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (recertified in 2006). Dr. Melrose is a member of the Society of American Magicians, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and Mensa. He is married and is a proud father.
